The Health and Safety Team at Unilever Canada in Peterborough, ON faced an ergonomic challenge in their pasta sauce preparation area. The vegetables used in the sauce arrive boxed and on pallets. Workers were having to bend repeatedly in order to feed vegetables into the dicing machine. The team was concerned about musculoskeletal injuries caused by the repeated bending and contacted Trans-Quip Inc. for a solution. Trans-Quip Inc. provided them with the SW-LS2-36X — a 2,000 lb hydraulic lift table with a 40” x 48” platform. Since the lift is being used in a food preparation area it was finished with stainless steel epoxy. To prevent the scissor assembly and hydraulic components from getting wet during cleaning, bolt on accordion style bellows were added.
The lift has a low height of 6 3/4” and a raised height of 42 3/4” with a vertical travel of 36”. It only takes 21 seconds to rise, keeping production moving quickly. An excess flow protector keeps the table from free falling should a hydraulic failure occur.
For reliable performance and long service life, many quality features are standard in all Southworth lifts including, but not limited to, lubricated for life bushings, heavy duty hoses, built in safety chock and wear indicating rollers and roll retainers.
The Unilever Health and Safety Team are very pleased with the equipment and have successfully eliminated the risk of back injury for workers feeding the vegetable dicing machine by incorporating the Southworth Lift Table into their production.
