Southworth products began working with the airport industry in the United States when “On the Job” back injury rates of baggage handling workers began to increase.
Workers in the baggage room are required to screen a select number of bags prior to being loaded onto planes. The bags are forwarded via conveyor to the screening room where workers lift them off the conveyor, transport and then lift them onto their workstation, inspect them, lift them off their workstation, transport them back and then lift them onto the conveyor. This process is then repeated all day long.
With the help of the airport industry, Southworth products designed a battery-powered Portable Elevating Workstation to minimize the lifting and carrying of heavy baggage and decrease the amount of “On the Job” back injuries.
Southworth’s Portable Elevating Workstations feature a grade #304 stainless steel work surface to ensure any contaminants/chemicals or residue present on one bag can be cleaned properly off the work surface and won’t contaminate the next bag.
Other features include 5” diameter swivel and rigid casters, automatic braking via pushbar release bar, a self-contained hydraulic power unit with 12 volt DC battery that is operated with on-board charger and bellows.
With a lifting capacity of 300 lbs the Portable Elevating Workstation has a lowered height of 12”, a raise height of 38”, a vertical travel of 26”, a rise speed of 4 seconds and a lowering speed of 7 seconds.
